Typically by this time of the year, a single film stands out that is certain to be crowned the year’s best by hundreds of critics (think of last year’s “No Country for Old Men”), but this year no such film has emerged. That’s not to say that we haven’t already seen many films that will top several lists.

Top 10 Prediction:

Two of this year’s biggest blockbusters, Pixar’s WALL-E and Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight should have no problem breaking the 100+ barrier this year.

They will be joined by a slew of independent films; most likely Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, Gus Van Sant’s Milk and Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married.

Most year’s a documentary slips into the top 10, and with this year being weaker than past years for nonfiction films, Man on Wire – the year’s most acclaimed documentary - will likely appear on several lists.

That puts us up to six, but there’ still four spots to go – most of which will likely go to films that haven’t been released in most areas yet.

The final four spots will likely go to films by filmmakers who have cracked the top 10 in previous years. Sam Mendes, who had the most acclaimed film of 1999 with American Beauty, could find himself topping the list for a second time. David Fincher’s follow-up to Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, has also been hyped by nearly everyone in the film industry.

Darren Aronofsky, whose Requiem for a Dream was hailed as a masterpiece, has received strong praise at film festivals for The Wrestler, staring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei.

That leaves just one final spot, and two films still battling for a position. John Patrick Shanley brings his acclaimed play Doubt to the big screen with star treatment (Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Phillip Seymour Hoffman) and Ron Howard adapts a screenplay by Peter Morgan (The Queen) in Frost/Nixon.

Although both films have received strong early reviews, Streep’s performance should give Doubt the edge it needs to crack the top 10.

Well, enough with my theories – what do you expect the top 10 to consist of?

Best Picture:

This year’s Best Picture race is more difficult to predict than any in recent memory, but one thing is for sure: Joel and Ethan Coen’s brilliant No Country for Old Men will be nominated. Apart from making more top 10 lists than any other film from 2007, No Country has already received nominations from all of the major Guilds and has swept nearly all of the critics’ awards.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood will also likely receive a Best Picture nomination next week, thanks to its recent nominations from the Directors and Producers Guilds. Ditto for Tony Gilroy’s Michael Clayton which has held strong through the award season.

The final two spots are nearly impossible to predict. Atonement has been a frontrunner long before anyone saw the film, but its recent absence from the Producers, Directors and Writers Guilds have nearly diminished its chances, even though it did win Best Picture at the Golden Globes.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly has also received strong support from critics and the Guilds. The Academy may choose to honor it in the Best Picture category, since it did not make the final cut in the Foreign Film category.

Instead, I’m betting Sean Penn’s Into the Wild and Jason Reitman’ Juno will make the final cut. Into the Wild has been gaining momentum in the past few weeks after scoring four Screen Actors Guild nominations and a Directors Guild nomination. Juno, despite its Golden Globe loss to Sweeney Todd, has been doing very well at the box office and recently received a Producers Guild nomination.

Best Director:

Fortunately, the Best Director race is a little less crowded. The race seems to be down to six contenders, with three of them being shoe-ins: Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men), Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood) and Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) will all receive nominations. In the past, actors who direct have also faired very well, which is good news for Into the Wild’s Sean Penn.

The Directors Guild nominations consisted of the above four directors, plus Michael Clayton’s Tony Gilroy. I’m betting that the beauty of Atonement will give Joe Wright the boost he needs to receive his first Academy Award nomination.

Best Actor:

If one thing is certain at this year’s Academy Awards, it is that Daniel Day-Lewis will receive a nomination for his overpowering performance in There Will Be Blood. Academy favorite George Clooney will likely join him for his performance as the lead character in Michael Clayton and newcomer Emile Hirsch should find that his weight-changing performance in Into the Wild will earn him a nomination.

The Screen Actors Guild gave its final two spots to Eastern Promises‘ Viggo Mortensen and Lars and the Real Girl’s Ryan Gosling, but I’m betting the Academy’s choices are in films that were more commercial, with Sweeney Todd’s Johnny Depp and Atonement’s James McAvoy.

Best Actress:

This year’s Best Actress race has three of the finest lead female performances in recent memory: Julie Christie’s heartbreaking performance as an Alzheimer’s patient in Away From Her, Ellen Page’s sassy pregnant performance in Juno, and Marion Cotillard’s brilliant portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. All three will certainly be nominated.

The final two spots, however, are a bit more difficult to predict. Keira Knightley will probably make the cut, thanks to a fine performance in Atonement and a strong fan base. But four others are close on her tail: The Savages‘ Laura Linney, Enchanted’s Amy Adams, Elizabeth’s Cate Blanchett and A Mighty Heart’s Angelina Jolie – whom I’m betting will sneak in despite the fact that Heart opened several months ago.

Best Supporting Actor:

If this category turns out like I think it might, Casey Affleck will have lost out to a slew of actors that were in more ‘Oscar-friendly’ films, including No Country for Old Men’s Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones, Into the Wild’s Hal Holbrook, Michael Clayton’s Tom Wilkinson and There Will Be Blood’s Paul Dano. Dano seems like an outsider who could still lose out to either Affleck or Phillip Seymour Hoffman of Charlie Wilson’s War. But, given the momentum of There Will Be Blood, I’m betting Dano gets the final spot.

Best Supporting Actress:

As of right now, it appears that Gone Baby Gone’s Amy Ryan and I’m Not There’s Cate Blanchett will battle it out until the end for the gold, but right now we can count on both being in the running. Tilda Swinton’s evil performance in Michael Clayton will also be in the running, but it’s difficult who else will be.

Given the recent surge for Into the Wild, I’m betting Catherine Keener will receive her first Oscar nomination since receiving one for her breakthrough role in Being John Malkovich. I would love to see Marisa Tomei honored for her great performance in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, but both she and the film seem to have been forgotten around the award circuit. If Atonement does better than expected, Saoirse Ronan may win a nod, but many voters may think she’s too young to be honored so highly. They won’t, however, think American Gangster’s Ruby Dee is too young, and I’m betting they’ll honor her with the last spot.

Best Original Screenplay:

As long as I’ve been around, I don’t remember any screenwriter gaining such a name for him or herself as Diablo Cody – with perhaps the exception of Charlie Kaufman. Perhaps it’s because she’s a former stripper, or perhaps it’s because she has written the freshest, funniest comedy of the year in Juno - either way, she’ll be nominated.

Even if he comes up short on a Best Director nomination, Tony Gilroy will likely be awarded with a nomination for his Michael Clayton script. Lars and the Real Girl and The Savages should also find room in the Best Original Screenplay race.

The final spot could go to either of two tragic pregnancy comedies: Knocked Up’s Judd Apatow was considered one of the top entertainers of the year while Waitress‘ Adrienne Shelly could be honored before her tragic death.

Ratatouille is more like to spoil Apatow’s chances, but giving his popularity in 2007, I’m giving him the marginal lead.

Best Adapted Screenplay:

Although it seems likely that Atonement’s popularity will pull it above Zodiac in this category, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the Best Adapted Screenplay nominees will match that of the Screen Actors Guild: No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Into the Wild and Zodiac will all receive nominations.

Why Zodiac? Because this seems to be the best bet for a major nomination for a film that has placed on more than 200 critics’ top 10 lists.

With the above quote, Mel Brooks drew the distinction between tragedy and comedy.  This year, a similarity was found: Nearly all of the year’s best films were either tragic or comedic, or – in the case of my favorite film – both. 

With that said, 2007 was a far cry from being a tragic year at the movies.  In fact, it was one of the finest years in recent memory, which made it difficult to limit my list to ten this year. In a weaker year, films like The Host, Away From Her and 3:10 to Yuma would have cracked the top ten.  This year, they’re my honorable mentions.

1. Juno

It sounds like something from a bad movie: a penniless stripper from the midwest packs up her bags and moves to Hollywood, only to become the most celebrated new screenwriter of our time – but that’s exactly what happened to Juno’s screenwriter, Diablo Cody.  Three years ago, Cody was taking off her clothes at a sleazy Minneapolis strip club – now the only thing that is taking off is her career, and rightfully so.  Juno is a pure delight from start to finish, stuffed with smart dialogue hardy laughs, and one amazing performance.  I’m of course speaking about Ellen Page (Hard Candy), who is nothing less than a revelation as the pregnant 16-year-old title character.  Page delivers every line with deadpan sass and even manages to squeeze out a few tears as the pregnant 16-year-old title character.  Juno may be a small film, but it provides us with laughs the size of Alaska.

2. Gone Baby Gone

A few cynical critics complained that Ben Affleck’s debut direction, Gone Baby Gone, was too much like Clint Eastwood’s 2003 masterpiece, Mystic River.  I, on the other hand, consider that the top-notch praise that this Baby deserves.  Casey Affleck, who will likely get an Oscar nomination for The Assassination of Jesse James, is great as a dedicated private eye who is determined to solve a complex kidnapping mystery.  Amy Ryan is also great as the bad parent who was at the bar while her child was being kidnapped.  Based on a novel by Dennis Lehane (who also wrote Mystic River), Gone Baby Gone unravels with twists and turns that will keep you at the edge of your seat until its heartbreaking finale. 

3. No Country for Old Men

Cat-and-mouse chases have been around long since the days of Tom & Jerry, but seldom have they been as good as No Country for Old Men, the newest film from Joel and Ethan Coen.  Tommy Lee Jones gives a great performance as a sheriff who hopes to track down a mass murderer who is more dangerous than the plutonic plague.  Javier Bardem plays the oxygen tank-carrying villain with a psychological creepiness that hasn’t been seen since Anthony Hopkins became Hannibal Lecter in the original Silence of the Lambs. 

4. There Will Be Blood

I can’t think of a better writer/director working today than Paul Thomas Anderson, the brilliant 37-year-old filmmaker whose credits prior to this year included Boogie Nights, Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love.  This year Anderson added another masterful work to his list with There Will Be Blood, a powerful story of greed, beliefs and oil.  Daniel Day-Lewis gives the performance of the year as Daniel Plainview, an early 20^th century oil tycoon with a young son and a dangerous passion for making money.  Thankfully, Anderson doesn’t care about making money by directing pointless blockbusters; rather he has placed his passion in making small movies that will be remembered for ages.

5. Knocked Up

Two years ago, Judd Apatow brought us the hilarious story of a 40-year-old man who had never had sex.  With his second film, Knocked Up, Apatow deals with sex amongst a much younger population and, ironically, the result is a much more mature comedy.  Knocked Up was the first of three pregnancy tragedies released this year (the others being Juno and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days), and it certainly set the bar high.  Seth Rogen stars in a career-making role as a fun-loving party animal who hooks up with a successful young news anchor in a night of drunken fun.  What happens next could probably be guessed from the film’s title, but no one could guess how funny and smart the film is along its way.

6. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead

Call it a mini-Fargo: two brothers – short on money – set up a plan to rob their parents’ jewelry store, only to have their plan fail miserably.  Syndey Lumet’s film, however, does not fail in any way; it’s his best film in decades.  Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman both give notable performances as the needy brothers, but it’s Marisa Tomei as Hoffman’s wife who gives the film’s standout performance.  She’s raw and heartbreaking, like the film itself. 

7. Into the Wild

We’ve seen this story hundreds of times: an individual travels to various places and solves everyone’s problems along the way.  By now, the story that is the base for Sean Penn’s Into the Wild should feel repetitive and dull, but it doesn’t.  Not even for a second.  Perhaps that’s because Emile Hirsch gives such a fresh, dedicated performance as Christopher McCandless, the recent college grad who gave up his life savings and identity to travel into the wild with the bare essentials. Despite having a common story, Into the Wild holds up on repetitive viewings; it’s the most inspiring film of the year.

8. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The year’s most poetic film belonged to Julian Schnabel, a French director who tells the story of a paralyzed man that writes a memoir by blinking his eye, one of only three parts of him that are not paralyzed – the others being his imagination and his memory.  Although the film has a rather tragic driving force, The Diving Bell manages to be strangely inspiring and even funny; it’s the year’s most breathtaking import.

9. The Savages

2007 brought us two great films about the pains of growing old: Sarah Polley’s Away From Her, which told the story of a lovely elderly woman who forgets her husband to Alzheimer’s, and this wonderfully depressing story of two siblings (Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffman) who reunite during their father’s final days.  The Savages isn’t always easy to watch, but it captures the pains and struggles of realizing that life is temporary better than any film in recent memory.

10. Once 

There was a time when good a good musical came around about as often as the winter Olympics.  Fortunately, those days are over.  2007 brought us a slew of acclaimed musicals: the sassy Broadway hit Hairspray, the almost-too-dark vengeance tale Sweeney Todd and the Beatles-tribute Across the Universe to name a few.  But despite having much larger budgets, none could compare to this small Irish treat.  Glen Hansard stars as an inspiring artist who plays a beat-up guitar on the streets for money.  One day while playing, a girl with a vacuum (Maketa Irglova) stops to listen to one of his songs – and why shouldn’t she?  After all, they’re some of the best songs I heard all year – on or off of the big screen. 

10. The Last King of Scotland

After starring in over 50 films and directing another handful (including “Hope Floats”), Forest Whitaker has finally made a household name for himself. He steals the show in “The Last King of Scotland” as a Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin, whose friendship with a young doctor (James McAvoy) grows increasingly dangerous as time progresses. Whitaker, with his beady eyes and exhausting passion, has received an abundance of acclaim for his performance, including a recent Golden Globe win. Unfortunately, however, McAvoy – who is also great – has been nearly forgotten during award season. Together, the two make “The Last King of Scotland” one of the finest acted films of the year. In fact, they make it one of the finest overall films of the year.

9. Children of Men

Clive Owens stars in the most thought-provoking sci-fi thriller since “Minority Report” as a former activist who, thanks to his ex-wife (Julianne Moore), must help save the future of mankind. The year is 2027, there has not been a child born in over 20 years, and people are still killing one another. Alfonso Cuaron’s futuristic world is anything but optimistic, yet it still manages to find value in human life. “Children of Men” boasts one of the smartest stories of the year, and it’s equally matched with its fierce direction and thrilling cinematography.

8. A Prairie Home Companion

In a way, it appears that Robert Altman (who died of cancer in November) wanted “A Prairie Home Companion” to be his last film – and it’s a fitting one at that. The film – which tells the story of the final days of a Minneapolis-based radio show – seems to imply that every good thing must someday reach its end. As they stage their final live show, each musician in “Companion” is filled with a sweet comfort to overcome the bitter sadness about the theater’s closing. “A Prairie Home Companion,” in its own way, is Altman’s way of giving a final thanks to his fans, but instead, it reminds us that we should be the ones thanking him.

7. Little Children

The little children, in Todd Field’s darkly entertaining follow-up to “In the Bedroom,” are not apparent at first sight. The title does not refer to the little tikes that run around at the playground and splash in the pool – rather it’s the grownups who act like children in this story. Kudos to Jackie Earle Haley, a former “Bad News Bears” child star, for giving the year’s most daring and memorable performance as a child sex-offender named Ronnie. With hopes of redeeming himself, Ronnie moves into a new neighborhood with his mother, only to be criticized by the surrounding immoral population. “Little Children” is like a dark comedy version of “In the Bedroom, a tragedy with brains and talent.

6. Tristram Shandy: A Cock & Bull Story

When asked why he decided to adapt Laurence Sterne’s 18th century novel – a novel that many consider unfilmable – to the big screen, Steve Coogan replies that the film was ranked number eight on an all-time list. The reporter, in response, informs Coogan that the books on that list are in chronological order.
Easy mistake. In fact, if I had made this list in chronological order, “Tristram Shandy” (which opened way back in January) would appear to be the best movie of the year– and those who have seen it would likely believe it. That’s because “Shandy” is a gem of a story. It’s part “Adaptation,” part “Spinal Tap” and completely hilarious. This is the most under-seen and underappreciated film of the year.

5. The Queen

With over 20 Best Actress award wins already, “The Queen” has quickly become known as Helen Mirren’s film. Sure, she’s great, but “The Queen” is much more than a one-person show. Let’s not forget screenwriter Peter Morgan (who also wrote “The Last King of Scotland”), who adds moments of humor between heart-breaking in his thought-provoking script that examines the royal family’s actions after Princess Diana’s tragic death. Nor can we forget Michael Sheen, who gives a strong supporting performance as Prime Minister Tony Blaire, or director Stephen Frears, who has been making masterful films for years. For me, however, the heart of the film belongs to Princess Diana, who continues to inspire us years after her tragic death.

4. Letters From Iwo Jima

Some things get better with age: fine wines, car insurance, and Clint Eastwood. For the third time in four years, Eastwood has placed a film near the top of my year-end list, this time with a beautifully humane war story that tells the Japanese side of the battle of Iwo Jima. Perhaps even more remarkably is the fact that this is the second Iwo Jima story that Eastwood gave us in 2006. The first was “Flags of Our Fathers,” a slow-moving but notable examination on how the media persuaded America to believe the war was necessary. His second film, “Letters From Iwo Jima” is simply a masterpiece. Like he did with “Million Dollar Baby,” he allows us to understand the characters’ feelings and motives – a gift that few directors in history have demonstrated.

3. United 93

Months before its release, protesters complained that it was too soon for a film to tear open our 9/11 wounds. Yet, years from now, we’ll be thanking director Paul Greengrass for making one of the most important films of the 21st century. Told in real time and accurate in its details, “United 93” feels more like an experience than a movie. Perhaps even more importantly, “93” celebrates the bravery of those who fought back on September 11th, and honors those who died. “United 93” is difficult to watch, but even harder to ignore.

2. Half Nelson

So many films these days try to do too much to impress audiences. “Half Nelson,” in its own simple way, is special because it never forces itself to do too much. Ryan Gosling (best known for “The Notebook”) gives the finest lead performance of the year as a well-liked junior high history teacher who has a secret addiction to crack cocaine. When a student catches him high on the drug after a late night basketball game, they build a much-needed friendship and trust. Under another’s hands, “Half Nelson” could easy have become implausible. Instead, it’s one of the most delicate, heart-breaking films of the year.

1. The Departed

In the opening lines of Martin Scorsese’s mesmerizing cat-and-mouse-chase of a movie, Jack Nicholson’s character informs us that “no one gives it to you – you have to take it.”
I bring this up because, for as long as I can remember, people have been crying “give Marty (Scorsese) an Oscar” and in recent years, it appeared that he was looking for a handout. Now he’s ready to take it. “The Departed” easily stands out as the best movie of the year; a film that leaves you entertained for nearly three hours and thinking about it for several more. Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio star at opposite sides of the social network: Damon is a successful FBI detective and DiCaprio is an undercover cop whose life is threatened every day. Unlike most of the films on this list, “The Departed” does not boast any deep message or hidden meanings, it’s simply pure entertainment. But if you do need a message out of the best film of the year it’s this: a film doesn’t have to have a message to be given the top spot on my list. It just has to take it.

Honorable Mention: I have seldom enjoyed watching a documentary as much as I enjoyed watching the Dixie Chicks’ Shut Up & Sing, a film that portrays one of America’s finest bands and their struggle against a media-driven America.

What was once considered a tight two-way race between Away From Her’s Julie Christie and La Vie En Rose’s Marion Cotillard has turned into the year’s most exciting three-way battle, thanks to the wonderful performance from Juno’s Ellen Page. 

Beloved film critic Roger Ebert became the latest member – and the most important – to jump aboard the Ellen Page band wagon when he chose Juno as the best film of the year.  Ebert has certainly played a strong roll in the past in the Best Actress category: both Halle Berry and Charlize Theron won trophies for performances in films that Ebert chose as the best of the year.  If Page can beat Cotillard at the Globes, she needs to be considered the frontrunner in this category.

Angelina Jolie should also hear her name called on nomination day.  The actress received a recent nomination from the Screen Actors Guild and received a Golden Globe nomination earlier this month for her performance in Michael Winterbottom’s A Mighty Heart. 

Elizabeth’s Cate Blanchett received similar nominations, but her film was a disappointment at the box office and it received subpar reviews.  Plus, Blanchett was honored with a nomination for playing the same heroine in a much better film in 1998.  As if that weren’t enough, Academy members will likely consider a Best Supporting Actress nominating for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in Todd Field’s I’m Not There to be sufficient.

That leaves just one open spot between three previous Oscar nominees.  Amy Adams sneaked into the picture after receiving comparisons to Julia Roberts in Walt Disney’s Enchanted.  Adams received a nomination two years ago for a much smaller film, Junebug, which shows that Oscar voters like her.  Then again, who doesn’t like The Savages’ Laura Linney, who has been one of the finest actresses of the new century.  Linney received a Golden Globe nomination, but was passed up by the Screen Actors Guild.  She could sneak in if The Savages has a strong opening, but she certainly has her work cut out for her.  That’s because the very popular Keira Knightley is also in the running for a much more popular film, Atonement.  If Atonement receives the support it is expected to get, Knightley will receive her second Oscar nomination – not bad for a 21-year-old.

Best Supporting Actress:

Up until a few weeks ago, Cate Blanchett was considered a sure-win in the Best Supporting Actress category for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in I’m Not There.  Recently, however, Gone Baby Gone’s Amy Ryan has emerged as a frontrunner after a slew of critics’ prizes came her way.  Ryan’s film, Gone Baby Gone, seems more like the type of film that the Academy likes to honor than Todd Haynes’s imaginative I’m Not There.

Tilda Swinton’s recent SAG nomination wiped away any doubts that the Michael Clayton actress would be left out of the picture.  The final two spots, however, are difficult to predict due to a split in the SAG awards and the Golden Globes.

The Globes chose Charlie Wilson’s War’s Julia Roberts and Atonement’s Saoirse Ronan while the Screen Actors Guild chose Into the Wild’s Catherine Keener and American Gangster’s Ruby Dee.  Since two of these films are losing momentum (Charlie Wilson’s War and American Gangster) and two are holding strong (Into the Wild and Atonement), I’m betting Ronan and Keener will take the final two spots – although I’d really like to see Marisa Tomei win a spot for her daring performance in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead.   

The SAG awards didn’t really clear anything up, either. Into the Wild, Sean Penn’s thought-to-be-out drama received the most nominations with four. Meanwhile two films that were considered front-runners, Atonement and There Will Be Blood struggled to receive a combined single nomination – for Blood’s Daniel Day-Lewis, which brings me to my Best Actor predictions.

Best Actor:
There are a handful of names that are certain to be announced on January 22, one of them being Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood. It seems that Day-Lewis has been the front runner for the Best Actor trophy long before the film was even completed, and with a Golden Globe nomination to go along with his SAG nod, he will continue to be the one to beat in this category.

The only other person I’d consider a sure-bet for a Best Actor nod is Michael Clayton’s George Clooney, who has been going strong since his surprise Broadcast Film Critics Best Actor win.

It’s a tight battle for the final three spots: Atonement’s James McAvoy won a Golden Globe nomination, but the film is quickly losing its hype to the Coen brothers’ No Country for Old Men. Ryan Gosling could earn his second nomination in as many years for his performance in Lars and the Real Girl, which he received Golden Globe and SAG nominations for.

Former Lord of the Ringer, Viggo Mortensen has also emerged as a possible nominee for his daring performance in David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises, which may be the film’s best chance for a nomination. Cronenberg’s last film, A History of Violence, received two nominations, so Academy members do not appear to be turned off by Cronenberg’s dark storytelling.

However, I’m betting that Academy members are more likely to take a liking to a different dark performance: that of Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s newly-released musical, Sweeney Todd. Depp missed out on SAG nomination, but I’m still betting that he will beat some strong competition at the Globes and secure his spot.

I’m also betting that the love for Emile Hirsch and Into the Wild will heat up over the next couple months – a leading four SAG nominations is a good start. His dramatic weight-loss and draining performance as Christopher McCandless is one of the finest performances I’ve seen all year.

Best Supporting Actor:

Fortunately, the Best Supporting Actor race is a bit more clear, which may allow people like me to look smarter than we actually are when nominations are announced.

Javier Bardem is certain to find that Academy members are his ‘friendo’ when his name is announced on January 22, for giving the most chilling villain performance since Anthony Hopkins played Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs.

Three other SAG-nominated performances will also likely get Academy nominations: Tom Wilkinson for Michael Clayton, rising star Casey Affleck for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Hal Holbrook for Into the Wild. The first two received nominations from the Globes and Screen Actors’ Guild; Holbrook was passed up on the Globes for John Travolta (Hairspray) and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Charlie Wilson’s War).

If the love for Charlie Wilson’s War begins to heat up, Phillip Seymour Hoffman could receive a nod for one of his many performances in the past year. However, the film continues to slip. Travolta also could get in, for his cross-dressing role as Tracy’s mom in Adam Shankman’s energetic musical, Hairspray. Last year’s Little Miss Sunshine breakout Paul Dano was an early front-runner for There Will Be Blood, but his early absence from critics’ awards has nearly disappeared him from the picture. Unless There Will Be Blood really heats up, he’s out of the picture. Ditto for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’s Max Von Sydow, who will only sneak in if Diving Bell gets several nominations.

Instead, I’m betting the final spot goes to recent SAG nominee Tommy Lee Jones, who gives a strong performance in the most acclaimed film of the year, No Country for Old Men.
